Something that I had to write on a topic along the line of who influenced you the most in your life, for an application to NTU.
And to be within 300 words.
“I believe that amongst the many of us, we have one thing in common - every individual soul has this inspirational story to tell. Something like their own chapter of Chicken Soup for the Soul, except that their stories are never known or least so till they are being poured out of their hearts. Well here’s mine but first I would like to thank you for giving me the privilege of having my own chapter.
Like many people, I grew up my teenage years as this innocent and naive young boy who plays soccer to forge a strong sense of brotherhood amongst his friends and aims to be successful when he grows up.
But unlike many people, he was given this opportunity to experience what a divorce feels like and how tough it is to see his own mum provide for him and his younger sister, all alone as a single parent. Opportunity because for what had happened became a blessing in disguise. The boy grew up with a sense of maturity that defies his age, something which he took in wholeheartedly as a bright side of his life.
Then unlike many people, he was again given the chance to see his pillar of strength crumble down to Earth through the death of his mum. Then he realized that the maturity he had garnered throughout the years has helped him stand on his own two feet.
Perhaps I’ll understand in the future what good my mum’s death will do to me, or her willingness to accept dad back into the family despite all the family violence that we had to endure.
Maybe she had understood what family means - for everyone to still stick together even though one of us is gone.
